Review: The Sorceress

One review at a time here, this review is for the book I finished last weekend.

The Sorceress
Michael Scott

It's hard to know where to start a plot summary when I'm dealing with the 3rd book in a 6 book series, so instead I'll direct you to my review of the first book in the series: The Alchemyst.

As written in my review of the first book, this series takes a mix of mythology and history and says, "What if all the myths were connected and still applied to modern times? What if ancient famous people were still around as agents in a greater scheme?

Therefore, if you like mythology and you enjoy historical figures, places, and things, than that should be a hint that this series may be for you.

Certainly, the books are written well and the plot is well thought out and engaging. There is plenty of action to go around while still taking the time to try to get you into the minds of several of the prominent characters.

Is it the deepest book I've ever read? Not at all, but that doesn't mean it's shallow. I would compare it the Percy Jackson series, only written in a more mature style and having slightly darker undertones. It feels more complex, but otherwise it has a similar central question. Like that series, it suffers from the fact that we a reader can't predict immediately forthcoming events, like which historical figure or myth will appear next or what incredible action will be taken. Because we, the readers, don't know the make-up or the laws within the book it is hard to foresee problems or solutions. Almost anything could happen. That being said, there is some inner consistency to what is possible, so we're not at a complete loss. Also, although immediately forthcoming events are hard to predict, longer term goals or events are slightly more foreseeable to the keen eye.

Although I mention some potential detractors, the truth of the matter is that I enjoy reading the series and I imagine it will continue thus so I have to recommend it. As before, if you enjoy mythology, history, and a bit of crazy adventure and mystery, then give this series a go. I doubt you'll be disappointed.
