It's Been A While...

Hey everyone. January's been a slow month in terms of poetry. I just haven't written much or edited much. It happens sometimes. So I just thought I'd post some of my old poetry for people to read, since every now and again someone visits this place. I might as well give them something new to read, if they like my stuff. Enjoy!

Portrait #1
A child in the cold
plays basketball
with a father
who isn’t there.

The wind skirts by him
like a stranger,
or his mother
who isn’t there

He stops to breathe the air:
cold, as is his stare
when he looks at you,
as you walk on by.

----------------------------

I like the idea of writing "portraits" and this was the first poem that I wrote as such, and probably my favorite such "portrait" as I feel that it really captures the situation and feeling.

----------------------------

Cocoon
A child under the ethereal moon
Gathers colors in his happy growing hands
His mind blossoms slowly in dreamless cocoon,
Starting the magic, imagining the man.

----------------------------

This poem was initially drafted using magnetic refrigerator poetry words. I love that stuff.

----------------------------

Symphony
Whisper spraying symphony
in the cautiously rushed water
is sweeter than honey.

----------------------------

Back in 8th grade, when we started going over poetry, our teacher wrote a bunch of random words on the board and we had to use some of them to make a short poem. I ended up enjoying my result quite a bit.

----------------------------

Some days the difference comes by night
Some days the difference comes by night:
A subtle glow behind deep shades of blue.
Wish a star to bless you with its light.

Always, it has been, the end is right
Though most complain and wish it wasn’t true.
Some days the difference comes by night.

It may be dark, but you retain your sight;
With ease look up, and find yourself a view;
Wish a star to bless you with its light

Or take the moon and bathe yourself in white,
Else we should sleep and find we’ve missed our cue
Discovering difference came by night.

Thus wait and see, the darkest dawn is bright;
Lift yourself to dream what you can do;
Wish a star to bless you with its light.

In darkness you lose yourself in fright
That those who gain life’s happiness are few,
But know the difference comes at night
And wish upon a star for light.

-----------------------------------

This is the first villanelle that I wrote and I quite enjoy it even now. Hope you do too.

As a final note, I've figured out how to put stuff onto google docs now, so if anyone wants to read my novella or other longer stories, let me know.
